What is a same-day crown?
A crown is a custom cap that covers a damaged tooth to restore its shape, strength, and everyday function. A same-day crown — sometimes called a one-visit crown or same-visit crown — is exactly that, made and placed in one appointment instead of two.
The difference is how it's made. A traditional crown is sent to an outside lab, which can take two to three weeks. During that wait, you wear a temporary crown and come back for a second appointment to have the permanent one cemented. A same-day crown is designed and milled right here in the practice, so the whole process finishes while you're in the chair. Same tooth, same day.
How CEREC works, step by step
CEREC is the digital system that lets Dr. Ravi make a crown in-house. Here is what actually happens at your visit, in plain steps:
- Digital scan. Dr. Ravi prepares the tooth, then takes a digital scan with a small handheld camera. No putty, no bite trays — just a set of images that build a precise 3D model of your tooth on screen.
- Design. Using that model, Dr. Ravi designs your crown to match the shape of the tooth and the way your bite comes together. You can see the design before it is made.
- Milled in-office. The design is sent to a milling unit in the practice, which carves your crown from a solid block of dental ceramic. This usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Fitted the same visit. Dr. Ravi checks the fit and your bite, makes any small adjustments, and bonds the finished crown in place. You walk out with the permanent crown fitted the same visit.
Because the scan is digital, there is nothing to gag on and nothing to send away. And because Dr. Ravi handles every step, the person designing your crown is the person who knows your mouth. No question is too small — ask about any part of it as we go.

What "one visit" actually means for you
The single-visit part is not only faster. It removes a few things patients tend not to enjoy:
- No temporary crown. Temporaries can feel bulky, come loose, or leave a tooth sensitive while you wait. A same-day crown skips that stage entirely.
- No second freezing. With a two-visit crown, you are numbed twice — once to prepare the tooth, once to cement the crown. A one-visit crown means one appointment and one round of freezing.

When you might need a crown
A crown does more than cover a tooth — it holds a weakened tooth together so it can keep working. Dr. Ravi may recommend one when a tooth is:
- Cracked or fractured, where a filling would not hold.
- Worn down from grinding or years of everyday use.
- Carrying a large filling that leaves too little natural tooth to stay strong on its own.
- Root-canal-treated, since a treated tooth becomes brittle and needs a crown to protect it.
- Badly decayed or broken, where the structure needs rebuilding.

The ceramic and the fit
Same-day crowns are milled from a solid block of dental ceramic. Ceramic is tooth-coloured, so the crown blends with the teeth around it, and it is strong enough for the daily work of biting and chewing. The colour is matched to your own teeth, and the shape is designed to sit naturally against the neighbouring teeth and meet your bite the way a healthy tooth would.
Because the crown is milled from one block rather than layered by hand, the fit is checked and adjusted with you in the chair until your bite feels right, before it is bonded in place.
Once it is bonded, a same-day crown is cared for like any other tooth: brush and floss around it as normal, and keep up with your regular checkups so Dr. Ravi can keep an eye on it over time. If you grind your teeth at night, mention it — a simple night guard can help protect the crown and the teeth around it for the long run.
