Sedation & anesthesia
IV Sedation Dentist in Mississauga
If the thought of a dental appointment makes your stomach tighten, you're not the only one — and you're welcome here. As an IV sedation dentist in Mississauga, Clarkson Village Dental helps nervous and anxious patients get the care they've been putting off, in a calmer, more comfortable way. Whether it's been a year or a decade since your last visit, there's no lecture waiting for you. Just Dr. Ravi, a quiet room, and a plan we'll walk you through before anything begins. Dental anxiety is real, and it's common. Some people feel uneasy about the sounds or the freezing. Others had a hard experience years ago that never quite left. Many simply feel out of control in the chair. Sedation dentistry is one of the ways we make that easier — so the fear stops standing between you and a healthy mouth.
You're not alone if the dentist makes you anxious
A lot of our patients tell us they've cancelled appointments, sat in the parking lot, or avoided the dentist for years. If any of that sounds familiar, please know it's something we hear often and treat with real care. Avoiding treatment usually doesn't make a problem go away — a small cavity becomes a bigger one, a bit of sensitivity turns into pain. Sedation gives anxious patients a gentler way back to regular care, before small issues grow.
No question is too small. If you want to call and simply ask how it works before you ever book, that's a good place to start.
Sedation options at Clarkson Village Dental
There isn't one "right" level of sedation — it depends on how you feel and what your visit involves. Dr. Ravi offers three options and will help you choose the one that fits:
- Nitrous oxide (laughing gas). A light option you breathe in through a small mask. It helps you feel calmer within minutes and wears off quickly, so most people can drive themselves home. Good for milder nerves and shorter appointments.
- Oral sedation. A prescribed tablet taken before your visit that leaves you drowsy and relaxed while still awake and able to respond. You'll need someone to drive you to and from the appointment.
- IV sedation. Delivered through a small vein, usually in the arm or hand, so it takes effect steadily and can be adjusted throughout your visit. It's the deepest of the three options we offer and suits longer or more involved treatment.
We'll explain each one in plain language, answer your questions, and never rush the decision. You'll see Dr. Ravi at every visit, and he'll plan your care with you.
What IV sedation is — and who it suits
IV sedation is sometimes called "sleep dentistry," but that name can be a little misleading. With IV sedation you're in a deeply relaxed, drowsy state rather than fully unconscious — this isn't general anaesthetic. Many people remember very little of the appointment afterward, and time tends to pass quickly. Because the medication is given through a vein, its effect comes on smoothly and can be fine-tuned as needed.
IV sedation tends to suit people who:
- feel very anxious about dental treatment, or have avoided it for a long time
- have a strong gag reflex or find it hard to sit through longer appointments
- need more complex or lengthy work, such as implant placement or reconstructive treatment
- would rather have several things handled in fewer, calmer visits
It isn't right for everyone, and that's an honest conversation we'll have first. Dr. Ravi will review your health history and medications, talk through your options, and only recommend IV sedation if it's a safe, sensible fit for you.
You're monitored throughout
Comfort matters, and so does safety. During IV sedation you're monitored the whole time — your breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels are watched closely from the moment sedation begins until it wears off. The level is kept only as deep as it needs to be, and it can be eased back at any point. You're never left alone. The goal is simple: you stay comfortable and at ease while the work gets done properly.
How a sedation visit works, start to finish
Knowing what to expect takes a lot of the worry out of it. Here's the shape of a typical sedation appointment:
- We talk first. Before we book any sedation, Dr. Ravi reviews your medical history, current medications, and what your treatment involves, then recommends the option that fits. We'll walk you through it before anything begins.
- You prepare at home. We give you clear, simple instructions — including how long to avoid food or drink beforehand and, for oral or IV sedation, arranging a ride home.
- We settle you in. On the day, we get you comfortable, explain each step, and begin sedation gently. For IV sedation, that's a small line placed in your arm or hand.
- Treatment happens while you relax. You stay calm and comfortable while Dr. Ravi works. Because you're more relaxed, we can often do more in a single appointment.
- You recover with support. We keep an eye on you as the sedation wears off, then send you home with your ride and easy-to-follow aftercare notes.
How to prepare for a sedation appointment
Preparation is straightforward, and we'll give you a written reminder so nothing is left to memory:
- Arrange a ride to and from your appointment for oral or IV sedation — you shouldn't drive for the rest of the day.
- Follow the fasting guidance we give you about food and drink before the visit.
- Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that move easily, which helps for IV placement.
- Tell us about your medications and health — including anything that's changed since we last spoke — so we can keep everything safe.
- Plan a quiet rest of the day. Most people feel back to normal by the next day.
If anything on the list is hard to arrange, tell us. We'll help you work it out.
More comfortable care, often in fewer visits
For anxious patients, one of the quiet benefits of sedation is efficiency. When you're relaxed, longer or more complex treatment becomes far more manageable — which often means we can combine steps and complete care in fewer appointments rather than spreading it across many visits. For involved work like implants or full-mouth reconstruction, that can make the whole journey feel a great deal easier. It's care built around your comfort, not just the clock.
One trusted dentist, from your first nervous visit onward
Continuity is central to how this practice works. Dr. Ravi has owned Clarkson Village Dental as an independent, dentist-owned practice since 2015, and he sees every patient personally, keeping implant, reconstructive, and sedation work in-house. That means the dentist who earns your trust on day one is the same dentist caring for you through everything that follows. Common questions
Questions answered.
- What sedation options do you offer in Mississauga?
- Clarkson Village Dental offers three options: nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for milder nerves, oral sedation with a prescribed tablet, and IV sedation for deeper relaxation during longer or more complex treatment. Dr. Ravi will help you choose the one that fits how you feel and what your visit involves.
- Is IV sedation safe?
- IV sedation is a well-established option when it's properly planned and monitored. Before we recommend it, Dr. Ravi reviews your health history and medications to make sure it's a sensible fit. During your visit, your breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels are monitored the whole time, and the level is kept only as deep as needed.
- Will I be asleep during IV sedation?
- Not fully — IV sedation is sometimes called "sleep dentistry," but it isn't a general anaesthetic. You're in a deeply relaxed, drowsy state and can still respond, though many people remember very little of the appointment afterward and feel like the time passed quickly.
- I'm very anxious about the dentist. Can you really help?
- Yes, and you're in good company. Many of our patients have avoided the dentist for years. We take dental anxiety seriously, explain everything before we begin, and use sedation to make care calmer and more comfortable. No question is too small, and there's no judgment about how long it's been.
- How do I prepare for a sedation appointment?
- For oral or IV sedation, arrange a ride to and from the appointment, since you shouldn't drive that day. Follow the fasting instructions we give you about food and drink, wear comfortable clothing with easy sleeves, and let us know about any medications or health changes. We'll give you a written reminder so nothing is left to memory.
- Do you accept new and anxious patients, including CDCP?
- Yes. We're accepting new patients, including through the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), which helps eligible Canadian residents with the cost of dental care — you can check your eligibility at canada.ca. Anxious first-time patients are especially welcome; our new patients page walks you through what to expect.
