Choosing a dentist · Mississauga
How to choose a dentist in Mississauga
Choose a dentist in Mississauga by checking seven things: that they are registered with the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO), what care they offer, whether their hours suit you, how they handle emergencies, how they handle insurance and costs, how clearly they explain things, and how easy the trip is. No ranking can tell you who is right for your family, but this checklist can help you decide.
The short checklist
- Registration: every dentist practising in Ontario must be registered with the RCDSO. Confirm it on the public register.
- Services: does the practice cover what your family is likely to need, or will you be referred elsewhere?
- Hours: do the days and times fit your work and school week?
- Emergencies: will someone see you when a tooth breaks or an ache will not wait?
- Insurance and cost: do they bill your plan, accept the CDCP, and give a written estimate before treatment?
- Communication: do you get clear answers, and a plan you agree to before work begins?
- Location: is it easy enough to reach that you will keep your appointments?
Check that your dentist is registered with the RCDSO
The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario is the body that regulates dentists in the province. It keeps a public register on its website, rcdso.org, where you can look up any dentist by name and see whether they are registered. It takes a minute and applies to every practice you consider, ours included.
Look at the services offered
A practice that handles more under one roof can mean fewer referrals and fewer new offices to learn. Ask what is done in-house. At Clarkson Village Dental Clinic that includes checkups and cleanings for children and adults, fillings, root canal treatment, same-day crowns, dental implants, orthodontic services, whitening and veneers, and sedation options for people who find treatment difficult. The full list is on our services page.
Make sure the hours fit your week
Ask for the actual hours, not just the days. Ours are Monday 8 to 5, Tuesday 8 to 6, Wednesday 8 to 5, Thursday 9 to 6, and Friday 8 to 3. Select Saturdays are available by appointment, and we are closed Sunday.
Ask what happens in an emergency
It is easier to ask before you need to. Find out whether the practice keeps time free for urgent problems and how to reach them. We keep room in the day for urgent problems and will do our best to see you the same day if you call early; see emergency dental care. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward your eye or neck, uncontrolled bleeding, or a serious facial injury, call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Ask about insurance, the CDCP and costs
Ask whether the practice bills your insurer directly, whether it accepts the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), and whether you will get a written estimate before treatment starts. We bill most insurance plans directly, accept patients covered by the CDCP (check your eligibility at canada.ca), and give a written estimate before anything begins. If you are new to us, see our new patients page.
Pay attention to how the practice communicates
You should come away from a first visit understanding what was found, what your options are, and what each costs, with no pressure to decide on the spot. Notice whether your questions are answered plainly, and whether you will see the same dentist next time. At our practice Dr. Ravi sees every patient himself. You can read more on our team page.
Think about the trip
A practice you can reach easily is one you are more likely to keep appointments with. We are at 1098 Clarkson Road North in Clarkson Village, in the south-west of Mississauga, just up from Lakeshore, with parking on site and Clarkson GO a few minutes away. Most of our patients come from Clarkson, Lorne Park, Port Credit and Lakeview and Mineola. If you are further north in the city, a closer practice may suit you better. Our Mississauga page says more about where we sit.
